Hello all you Baby Mamas and Daddies!
Are you currently searching for a newborn/baby photographer? If the answer is yes, I’m your gal.
Most of my newborn sessions take place at my home/studio here in Southie. I am willing to discuss other location options if you’d prefer. I use natural light and minimum props to maintain focus on your little bundle of joy.
You should plan to book when your newborn is between seven and twenty-one days old. I suggest reaching out when you are approximately 6 months pregnant. The session will take approximately an hour to an hour and a half. The amount of time will depend on the baby’s mood. Don’t stress if you’re little one is a bit of a crank the day of the appointment. Most times it only takes about fifteen minutes of cooperative or calm behavior to get a few beautiful photos. It always works out.
Baby sessions for aged six to twelve months, should be booked before or after nap time or when the little one is at his/hers most comfortable (use your best judgement). These sessions may take place at an outdoor location depending on weather. Feel free to bring an additional outfit. Cake smash sessions are an offering as well.
As always, you’ll have the option to jump in a couple of shots if you’d like.
Here are a few resources (all in Southie) for your newborn/baby session and new mom needs!
For the most perfect baby clothes, accessories and toys, check out BRINGING UP BABY.
NAPS is a support program for expecting and new moms. They offer services to help prepare you for motherhood, nursing, sleep routines.
My adorable neighbor Sam, told me about this awesome fitness class for moms. EVOLVE offers a Mom and Baby workout to help you destress and get back into shape postpartum. They are located on West Broadway in South Boston.
I can't wait to meet you and your baby!

1.) Choose ONE Outfit You Love - It can be yours or your partner's or your child's. Once you've made that choice, you can base everything else off of it. Keep in mind color and season and most importantly, make sure you feel comfortable and fabulous in it!
2.) Coordinate Colors without Matching - Once you pick that one outfit (for example a pink dress) choose tones that compliment that pink dress. Green, navy, denim - those colors are all complimentary but don't match.
3.) Pick a Great Photographer - Honestly, I'm hoping you've already chosen me (wink, wink).
4.) PREPARE - Plan in advance to make sure your clothing choices are ironed and your have all your accessories and footwear ready to go. The more prepared you are, the less stress you'll experience the day of your session - which means you'll be able to relax and have FUN.
5.) Keep Patterns to a Minimum - My recommendation is one or two people in subtle patterns and the others in solids. I LOVE patterns and I think they look great in photos - just not too many. We want the focus to be you and your beautiful family.
6.) Be COMFORTABLE in what You're Wearing - Making sure you look good in your outfit is super important but you also neeed to make sure you are comfy. This tip is especially important when it comes to the kids. If they are wearing something that is itchy, stiff or doesn't fit quite right - they are not going to be happy and we don't want that!
7.) HAVE FUN - Of course the most important goal I want to accomplish during your family session is getting some great shots BUT I also want to create a fun and relaxing atmosphere that you and your fam will enjoy!
SHOPPING FOR YOUR SESSION:

Uber-talented interior designer Justene Spaulding of JS Interiors hired me to take photos of recent work for her website. One of the projects she needed photographed was the home of my good friend and super stylish blogger - www.caughtinsouthie.com - Maureen Dahill.
The space was full of eclectic pieces, pops of color and plenty of comfy places for this beautiful family to hang out and relax together. This home totally embodies Maureen's whimsical style.

Lifestyle Photography by Deb McCarthy
We had a great time photographing Brooke while she did some "good deeds!" She planted some flowers to beautify the neighborhood, swept up some litter (all us Southie peeps should be doing that on the reg), set up a lemonade stand and donated all the proceeds to a local charity (of course) and walked a few super-cute bulldogs for a neighbor who was not able to do it herself. OK maybe she didn't really do all these things (they were all staged for our shoot) but she is definitely the kind of kid who would be willing to! Thank you for being such a great model Brooke! Thank you to my wonderful friend Kelly for being the hairstylist and photo assistant.
All these images were made in the beautiful Thomas Park neighborhood of South Boston. My favorites are the dog-walking photos at the top of Telegraph Street. Please feel free to leave a comment - I'd love to hear from you!

Hi Everyone,
Thought I'd share some images from this really fun shoot I did with some super cool people.
My friend Kelly let us use her fabulous new home as a location. My gorgeous friend Eva joined us along with two of the most adorable little girls, Brooke and Fiona! We spent the afternoon photographing the girls hanging out and having fun. They played under a blanket fort, read books, baked cookies and just acted silly (which I love!).
My multi talented daughter, Hannah, did the hair and make-up and the most fabulous photography assistant in the world, Ellie, set up lights and reflected a golden glow on our models. Catherine and Angela hung out and helped dress the girls and set up shots.
Thanks to all the fabulous ladies who helped me get some really nice photos!
Enjoy!

Hi Everyone,
There's snow on the ground (YUCK) but it's the beginning of April and I can't wait to see the flowers (tulips are my fave) and the cherry blossom trees and the gorgeous green color everywhere. So many wonderful occasions take place during the Spring - weddings, graduations, recitals, Mother's Day and First Holy Communions! My family and I have a HUGE reason to celebrate next month - my daughter is graduating from college and we could not be more proud!
DMP is now booking First Communion Portraits and I'm offering several package options to capture this special day. For rate and package information click here and please check out my brand spanking new communion portfolio. I'd love to hear what you think so please feel free to comment or drop me a line. All communion sessions are booked at a beautiful outdoor location.
For some gorgeous Communion inspiration I've put together this Pinterest board. You'll find ideas for adorable party favors, fabulous dresses, veils and hair styles, beautiful accessories and gorgeous cakes.
I've included a list of some of my favorite vendors to help you get ready for this blessed event in your child's life!
Communion Dresses/Suits:
The Nutshell, Milton This is where I bought my daughter's communion dress 14 years ago.
Prospect Hill, Brockton In addition to dresses and suits, they also carry religious gifts.
Nordstrom, Braintree I'm assuming everyone knows there's a Nordstrom at the South Shore Plaza but I did not know they carry communion dresses. Good to know, right?
Hairdresser:
Roots, Southie Kerry and Janine do a fabulous job. Book early because these girls are busy.
The Beauty Bar Dyan LaRosa and her talented staff offer many different beauty services that will have you looking gorgeous.
Bakery:
Sweet Tooth Boston I always trust Glenn to make the most beautiful and delicious cakes for our celebrations.
Baked Good. Jen Jacoby does an awesome job with her cupcakes and cake pops. The kids love them!

DMP: You are a Southie native. Tell us what it was like growing up in Southie and what you like best about living there now?
TM: I love being a South Boston native. I love people's reaction when they ask where I am from. Southie has some very distinct characteristics and I take pride in the fact that I am a true Southie girl - I represent! Growing up in Southie has shaped who I am and has helped me be able to adapt to many different situations. I always felt a strong sense of community there as a kid and I still do today. I couldn't imagine growing up anywhere else! I decided to raise my son, James, in my hometown so he could have a similar upbringing. Whenever I think of Southie - I think - there is no place like home. One of my fondest memories as a kid was learning to french braid hair. It was the day I would receive my First Holy Communion and a teenager who lived on my street french braided my hair on the front steps of her house. I loved my french braids so much that I practiced all the time until I could do it on my own (I wanted to look like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz). That experience is what began my love of hair.
DMP: How did you become a Hair and Make-Up Artist?
TM: I attended Blaine Cosmetology School when I was nineteen years old. I figured I'd have to work for the rest of my life so I may as well do what I love and what I am naturally good at. When I was a teenager I always did my friends' hair in puffs, or a perm or I would tease their bangs and spray with Aquanet (remember that?). I learned to apply make-up later in my career. After working in local salons for eight years I ventured out and started working on professional photo shoots. A fellow H/MU artist gave me a lesson. I assisted on shoots for about a year before being booked as the primary Hair and Make-Up Artist.
TM: What was your first job?
DMP: I worked at a local salon called Maria's. It was a great place to learn the tricks of the trade. The hairdressers I worked with had been in the business for years. Clients would come in for roller sets, teasing, updos and lots of hairspray! Many of the women were weekly customers and expected their hairdos to last a full week and I had to make sure they did. Maria's gave me a great foundation.
DMP: What kind of assignments do you take? You have representation but do you free-lance as well?
TM: You name it, I do it. I am represented by Anchor Artists and they handle all my commercial work but I also do bridal beauty, funeral parlor beauty and home clients. I am involved with an organization called Look Good...Feel Better and it is the work I am most passionate about. I conduct workshops for women who are dealing with appearance related side-effects as a result of cancer treatments.
DMP: Tell us about some of the glamorous photo shoots you have worked on?
TM: I have worked in some beautiful homes and gorgeous outdoor locations. I provide hair and make-up services for print advertisement, magazines and catalogs. I occasionally like to brag about working with Ben Affleck. I did his hair and make-up for an interview with Diane Sawyer. He was the first celebrity I worked with so I was a bit nervous. A peer of mine gave me the best advice: "Just be yourself." Being a Southie native helped me break the ice with him. We chatted about Good Will Hunting which was filmed in South Boston. He was so down to earth, by the end of the shoot it felt like he was a kid I grew up with!
DMP: You are quite the fashionista! Tell us a little about your style and how you like to wear/do your own hair and make-up.
TM: I adapt my style to the occasion. I like to dress the part and I am lucky I can be creative and have fun with my style and what I wear to work. I will wear what speaks to me that day! Although noo outfit is complete without great hair and make-up. You can rock any style with confidence when your hair and make-up look fabulous!!
DMP: Could you share a make-up tip for a perfect photo ready look?
TM: Hire me for the day and I will let you in on a few tips - Just kidding! Your base has to be strong - you must have a great concealer and foundation. The rest of your make-up will tie right in. Creating that perfect blank canvas is the key to a photo-ready make up appliacation.

What a treat it was to take these photos! I am a portrait photographer so It's mostly just me and my camera, an assistant holding a reflector and my subject(s) on my shoots and I love doing that kind of work. I also love collaborating with talented people!!! I saw this amazing edtirorail in Harpers Bazaar a few months back featuring vintage bathing suits and beach locations and I immediately knew I wanted to do a styled Beach Shoot!!!
I reached out to my pal (and local Southie gal) Tammi McEvoy to see if she'd be interested and she reached out to Michelle Coughlan, a super cool stylist she had recently worked with and we all met for coffee at the Cranberry Cafe and well, here's the results!!!
We had to change locations because we got rained out 2 weeks in a row (bad luck) and our original spot was no longer available but luckily, my good friend, Cheryl has a beautiful home in Marshfield right near the beach so that's where we ended up!! This was super fun and I'm so excited about the images.
A special Thank You to Angela and Natalie and, of course, our gorgeous models, Lauren and Paige!!
Enjoy!

]]>DMP: Where did you grow up? Do you live in Southie now?
SS: I grew up in and around Manhattan. I now, most happily call Southie or SOBO, coined by the New York Times, my home. I have lived here for 5 years and will be a lifer.
DMP: Where did you go to college?
SS: I earned my degree in Child Psychology and Contemporary Dance from the Bennington College, a small artsy college in VT.
DMP: Have you always worked in retail? Is Bringing Up Baby the first store you have owned? What made you decide on Southie as a location for Bringing Up Baby?
After college I moved back to NYC prepared to attend Hunter College for an advanced degree in Dance Therapy. My senior thesis specifically defended dance therapy as a viable approach in the treatment of autistic children and I was going to reach them one a time. As life would have it, a summer job on the floor of the Community Exchange took me on a totally different path. I discovered I had an interest in business, met my husband, adopted two wonderful children and moved to Boston. It was here that I embarked on a retail career. Having worked for several luxury brands in various capacities, I decided to combine my interest in children with my success in retail development and Bringing Up Baby was born. Southie is the perfect place to open a local business. We are a neighborhood and have a strong sense of community. I saw a real need for a one-stop children's specialty store where parents, grandparents and friends felt comfortable and children could come and play. In August of 2013 we opened the doors and have not looked back. I would love to ideally have three stores butr for now we are happily enjoying seeing our little clients grow and develop.
DMP: Would you describe your style and talk a bit about how you choose the clothing and other items in Bringing Up Baby? How do you know what the moms of South Boston are going to want to dress their children in?
SS: My style depends on the day. I personally gravitate to slightly edgier clothing with strong design lines. Buying is totally different and the most difficult part of my job. It is a long process steeped in emotion alternating between joy and angst. I am constantly researching lines and always trying to bring in something new and wonderful. I try to balance different categories in my assortment. Fashion forward, edgy, classic, preppie, sophisticated, etc. but most important good quality at a good value. Then there is the fun part, finding the "Chanel" like pocketbook or the next great bow tie. It has definitely been a learning experience and continues to evolve as fashion and tastes change.
DMP: What are some of your favorite clothing lines, toys, etc.? What do you recommend to Moms for their kids to play with or to help make Mom's life a little easier (strollers, baby bags)?
SS: My personal favorites, that's a hard one. If pressed I would have to say Mayoral and Fore for boys, Butterscotch, Raspberry Plum and Rachel Riley for girls. Kissy, Lucky Jade and Kate Quinn in Layette, Chloe K and Hannah Hats for accessories and Uppa for travel systems. Toys that make children think and create.
DMP: Could you give us a few suggestions for a fabulous baby shower gift? Kid's birthday gift?
SS: Anything Kissy for the classic shower gift. Tutus made in Europe with ballet flats, a "Hermes or Chanel" like pocketbook and some Jackie O sunglasses for something totally useless and fun (also featured items in our Little Princess Shoot). A pirate's hide-away or Brio train sets. It's all good!!
DMP: What items do you have at the shop that would be perfect for the Little Princess Photo Session?
SS: We have tutus, crowns, sparkly dress, wands, headdresses and imagination! All fit for a princess!!!
Located at 663 East Broadway, South Boston, Bringing Up Baby is a one stop specialty shop for your infant, toddler and tween. Featuring a wonderful assortment of unique brands sure to please even the most fashion forward consumer. ]]>The man himself!!
DMP: Where did you grow up and how long have you lived in Southie?
PZ: I grew up in Melrose and have lived in Southie for 13 years.
DMP: What is your favorite part of living in Southie? What do you like to do in the neighborhood?
PZ: My favorite part of living in Southie is the neighborhood feel you get here. My neighbors know my name and I know theirs. I love living close to the ocean and being able to walk the dogs on the beach and at Castle Island. Some of my favorite spots to eat are: Cafe Portobello, The Lincoln, Stephi's and Salsa's. It's so nice to just be able to walk to your destination too! I spend a lot of time at the Drive-In Paint Mart too.
DMP: I hear you have a fabulous place in Maine! Tell us a little bit about that.
PZ: Yes! My husband and I bought a place in Kennebunkport, Maine about 5 years ago. For us - It's a small piece of heaven!! It's a 1948 gambrel style home outside with a traditional/modern interior featuring a large front porch which is the perfect spot for Spring Cocktails! We love spending time there year round (when our busy schedule allows). It is a very short walk to the beach and we spend a lot of time walking the dogs there and of course entertaining friends and family!!!
Here's a shot of Peter's fabulous house in Maine. Those are his adorable dogs - Max and Turner - out front!
DMP: Where did you go to college? Have you always been interested in Interior Design?
PZ: I went to Chamberlayne School of Design. I graduated in 1994. I have always been interested in Interior Design. At a very young age I drove my parents crazy moving furniture, painting walls and decorating for the holidays!!
DMP: Tell us about Design Complements?
PZ: My partner Rachel and I have been in business for 12 years now. We are a full service interior design firm which means we design homes from the ground up working in conjunction with architects and contractors; to accessorizing a single room. We find that our clients utilize our expertise for kitchen and bathroom renovations and also to completely finish a room with furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories. Our strength is that we understand how best to incorporate design and function for the individuals we are working with in all styles. We don't limit ourselves to concentrating on one style over another and in many cases we actually combine elements of traditional, modern and metropolitan to create eclectic and interesting spaces. It is important to understand our clients needs and personal style to create spaces they will be happy and comfortable in for years to come. Good communication is key and we strive to have fun throughout the process.
Here are some shots from a few of the houses Peter has designed. Gorgeous! Am I right????
DMP: Could you give us a few tips on freshening up our homes for the Spring/Summer Season? In your opinion, where are the best bargain places to shop for your home (for those of us on a budget!)?
PZ: I think the best way to make your space look updated and "freshened up" is to change a paint color in a room or just paint one wall with an accent color. You could also try changing fabrics on your windows or maybe a few new pillows, painting or lacquering a piece of furniture and adding a few new rugs. Any of these projects will make a big impact in your space. If you are looking for some home bargains, I suggest taking a trip to a consignment store. I have found some wonderful pieces at stores like Boston Consignment and Garage Sale and salvage companies like Old House Parts. Also, don't forget the good old Flea Markets and Antique Stores!
DMP: Since the warm weather is upon us, everyone is dying to spend time outside! One of my favorite parts of Spring/Summer is spending time on my patio. Could you give us a few pointers on throwing a simple yet divine casual cocktail party?
PZ: I like to decorate with bright colorful linens and cushions. Use fun cocktail napkins and casual flowers, some potted succulents and plenty of flattering lighting! My favorite cocktails to serve are Aperol Spritz, Pineapple Margaritas and Lillet on the Rocks. I keep the food choices simple and choose dishes that can be prepared before the guests arrive so that I can spend time with my guests and not in the kitchen. Crostini with basil pesto, apricot/curry cheese spread and Mexican cheese spread, citrus grilled shrimp and mushroom pate are a few of my favorites. It's all about tasty cocktails, yummy treats, fun color and laughing and enjoying each others' company! Be sure to check out my Spring Cleaning/Decorating Board on Pinterest for these recipes and also inspiration for your next Patio Cocktail Party!

It's that time of year for warmth, flowers, grass, grilling, gardening and of course, SPRING CLEANING! Washing windows, cleaning out the basement and vacuuming under the beds are just a few of my spring cleaning chores. Maybe you are even considering sprucing up your walls with a fresh coat of paint (aren't you ambitious?) - well I'd just like to mention that some gorgeous new photos (maybe a canvas print or two) would look awesome on your freshly painted walls!

One last thing, I am sharing my awesome-smelling and super powerful deodorizing spray recipe! This spray works wonders especially if you dogs (I have 2).
Deb's Household Odor Killing Spray (I didn't actually invent this but I forget where I got it):
1 tsp. Baking Soda
1 tbsp. White Vinegar
2 c. Water
1 drop of Essential Oil - fragrance of your choosing - I use Lavender because I love it!
Mix ingredients in a Spray Bottle and get to spraying. Your house will smell heavenly - I promise!!

DMP: Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you grow up? Where did you go to college and what was your first job out of college?
PS: I grew up in Woburn but have have lived in Southie for about 15 years. I went to college at Chamberlayne school of Design and Merchandising at Mt. Ida College for fashion merchandising and marketing. I was a Patriots cheerleader for 4 years and my first "fashion" job was at Louis Boston where I worked for 7 years.
DMP: What did you do before opening HABIT? What is closet cleansing and how did you develop the skills to do it?
PS: Before opening Habit, I worked at Louis Boston in women's sales and started a personal shopping and closet business while researching the perfect spot for our boutique. I have always worked in the retail industry or marketing industry leading up to that position. At Louis, it was very much more of a personalized sales experience when working with clients. I learned a lot about the latest and greatest of the fashion world, a lot about design and fabrics and customer service. This gave me the knowledge of how to build a fashion relationship with a person and keep up with their their specific needs and changing lifestyle. This experience helped me to build a closet consult business and personal shopping business, as well as opening Habit. We work one on one with clients to help them either rebuild a wardrobe or help them to work with their existing collection, and enhance what they already have. A closet cleanse is always a good start. Shopping and recreating your own closet can be such a fun experience!
DMP: Have you always been interested in fashion/style? Was your mom or another relative a fashionista? How did you develop such great taste and who is your fave fashion icon?
PS: I've always enjoyed the fashion business and working with people and am lucky enough to do what I truly love. I always knew that I wanted to work in the fashion/retail world somehow, and dreamed about opening a boutique one day. My parents and family are all pretty stylish people and enjoy fashion as well. My brother is a fashion designer in NY, so maybe it just runs in the family. I don't particularly have one fashion icon, but I do enjoy looking out to see what people like Gwen Stefani, Sarah Jessica Parker, Alexa Chung, Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss and Nicole Richie are wearing these days!
DMP: In your opinion, what's the best part about living in Southie? Favorite places to eat, drink, work-out etc....
PS: I LOVE Southie and everything it has to offer! I love being so close to the water and the beauty of running down the beach or just relaxing by the water for a couple of hours during the summer. We really do have the best of both worlds..city living and the beach. I also feel like South Boston is a very close knit community and people are friendly and always willing to help out. I've felt this way from the very beginning and It feels like home. I do love all the new restaurants and bars in the area and the new places to shop. I am excited to see what South Boston will be like in 5 years...not that I want to rush anything of course! I was recently at Loco for delicious tacos and drinks with some friends. It looks great and is very tasty! In Southie, I tend to hang out at Lincoln, The Playwright, Loco and Stephi's and do love Sunday brunch at Local 149. It's also great being so close to the waterfront and love going to see bands down there during the warmer months.
DMP: When did you decide to open Habit? Tell us about the shop what you offer.
PS: We opened up Habit about 8 1/2 years ago. Habit is a small women's clothing and accessories boutiques located at 703 E. Broadway. We are open everyday and also host after hours events at Habit and at local restaurants/bars and shopping events for clients at their homes. Habit has a lot to offer to every customer. We have affordable clothing and tons of great accessories. We also have great sales and do fun promotions and events at Habit regularly. We post all our info on our social media pages or you can sign up for our email blasts. Our in store events range from wine tasting to trunk shows to make up events. Always looking for something fun to offer our customers.
DMP: What's up next? I hear a new shop is coming to East Broadway......
PS: A new venture is happening soon for myself and South Boston. I am partnering and opening a new store called Wears + Wares in the old Flood Square space in South Boston on Broadway. We are hoping to open in spring/early summer the latest. The shop will be more of a home, gift, accessories shop with some women's clothing, some shoes and a splash of men's clothing and accessories as well. I hope the guys of South Boston will be happy with that!
I'd like to Thank Pam for taking the time to answer my questions. I wasn't sure what it would be like writing this blog piece and I'm happy to say it was so much fun! HABIT hosts some really fun events! You can keep up to date by following on Instagram: habitboston and facebook: Habit and make sure to check out the piece I shot for Caught in Southie featuring some really cool fashions from Habit!!
